Timber Species

1: Softwood.

We use redwood (Pinus sylvestris), from either northern Sweden or Siberia. We only use timber from northerly latitudes, as it is slow grown and much more stable than pine from more southerly locations. All our redwood comes from FSC-certified sources and typically comes from 50 to 70 year-old trees.

2: Hardwood.

Due to the variable availability of different species when sourcing from FSC certified forests, we use a number of species. Typically, we manufacture from the following;

Cedro Rosa (Cedrela fissilis, Cedrela odorata).

This is a light coloured timber from a wide region of South America. It is durable and stable, whilst also being relatively light in weight. It also as a very pleasant and distinctive smell. The C.fissilis we use comes from northern Argentina and Paraguay, whilst the C.odorata comes from the Amazon region of Brazil, both from sustainably managed, FSC-certified producers.

Tatajuba (Bagassa guyanensis).

This is a hard, heavy, stable and durable timber from Brazil that is used principally where we specify large sections of timber.

Red River Gum (Eucalyptus tereticornis).

This timber comes from small plantations in Uruguay, which were planted early in the 20th century to provide shade on large cattle ranches. Small-scale certified harvesting is taking place, producing a very durable timber that is also very hard.

Cerejeira (Amburana cearensis).

This timber is also known as Spanish Oak in the Americas. It is durable, stable and of medium weight. We use this attractive timber in our Sauveterre range, where we source the timber from certified forests in North-Eastern Bolivia. We are also now using certified Cerejeira from Brazil in our Winer Diner, Academy and A Frame ranges as well.
